MOSAICS
"A MOSAIC CARPET - A LASTING CELEBRATION

This magnificent 6 x 3 metres mosaic carpet is the centre piece of a planned 'Outdoor Room' in Latimer Centre Pupil Referral Unit playground. Every single pupil attending in the 1995-96 academic year plus Centre and other Education staff made at least one of the 72 vibrant tiles over two terms. Environmental sculptor Maggie Campbell brought the vision and expertise to make ideas a reality... On the strength of the maths work involved and the report the Carpet was selected as one of the top 6 out of 40 LEB region submissions. Pupils involved went to the Bank of England to receive an award which will help the Centre move towards phase II of the 'Room' - breezeblock sofas!
Work on the carpet has contributed to the pupils' Art and Maths GCSE successes as well as RSA (IT) and vocational attainment; previously disaffected and unmotivated young people gained a tremendous sense of their own worth and ability to see an assignment through. Several have undertaken 16 plus studies as a direct result of their involvement..."
